CONSULTANCY IN INTERNATIONAL CHEMICALS MANAGEMENT AND STEWARDSHIP

Bernhard Johnen Consulting offers a unique package of services and crop protection product management covering regulatory policy, strategy and requirements (including data protection issue): product safety; and full product 'life-cycle' stewardship.

The consultancy extends to

• Interpreting of and complying with chemicals and crop protection production legislation, regulations and Conventions such as
       -  EU Registration Directive 91/414/EC
       -  Rotterdam Convention on Prior Informed Consent (PIC)
       -  Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

• Providing advice on emerging legislation and international agreements such as
       -  E.U REACH proposals
       -  UNEP Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM)

• Performing analyses on regulatory processes and positions and developing matching regulatory strategies

• Representing clients at regulatory and other agencies or organisations involved in chemicals and crop protection management

• Advising on ownership rights of proprietary registration data and negotiating on data protection, access to data and data compensation

• Interpreting and advising on compliance with (product) stewardship principles, such as
       -  interpreting of and assisting with implementation of the revised FAO Code of Conduct on
          the Distribution and Use of Pesticides
       -  developing of production stewardship guidelines and compliance monitoring
       -  integrating of stewardship with other aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)

Bernhard Johnen has a degree and doctorate in 'Agriculture'.  After spending sometime as research scientist in ecology, he held subsequent positions Head of Environmental Sciences, Head of Product Safety and Registration, Head of Regulatory Affairs and Head of Stewardship in ICI and Zeneca Agrochemicals.  Following the merger of Zeneca Agrochemicals and Novartis Agriculture into Syngenta he held the position of Head of Health, Safety and Environment in the new company.

Bernhard Johnen also served for many years on technical and regulatory committees in Crop Protection Industry Associations.  He chaired the Technical, Scientific and Regulatory Committee of CropLife (the international Plant Science Industry Association) and its predecessors, GCPC and GIFAP, for almost 20 years.
